f you are a rail passenger traveling from Germany to Switzerland, you’re in for a surprise: It is actually possible for trains to run on time! This may be because people in Switzerland take the
subject of time very seriously. And they have a clear plan for how things should be done. This wise insight also inspired Trekking Through History. In three rounds, designer Charlie Bink sends us on trips called “treks” which score all the more points the longer they last. This is achieved by collecting cards with years in strict chronological order. The only awk- ward thing is that the other players try to do the same.
The competition for the cards is con- trolled by a large pocket watch, which tells us that the player furthest back takes their turn first. The player chooses one of six cards on display and places it in their own milestone. The year cards show events in world history with detailed de- scriptions on the back. Those who take certain cards also receive colored bonus tokens that are deposited on their itiner- ary for additional points.
In addition, there are time crystals that help us save hours on the pocket watch. Trekking is tricky because the time travel cards come into play in three sets. The third set has much more recent years, while the first one goes back to prehistoric times. Since all players have a table with the card’s year numbers in front of them, they can gamble cleverly with their knowledge. If everything goes wrong, you just break off a trek and start a new one.
One to four time travelers from ten years and up are on the move through the centuries for about three quar- ters of an hour. By the way, Trek- king Through History has a punctuality bonus every round. No wonder that the Swiss publisher
Game Factory was happy to take it on from US company Underdog Games. It is announced for October—let’s see if they manage to keep that punctuality pledge as well. (sd/cs)

aming teaches us stuff. See, without the expert game Nucleum, an im- portant part of Saxon industrial history would have remained obscure. After all, it was Elsa von Frühlingsfeld who invented
atomization in the mid-19th century and presented it to the king. A generation later, households in Saxony were supplied with electricity from uranium and entire industries were powered this way. Saxony became the science hub of Europe.
With this in mind, Nucleum by Dávid Turczi and Simone Luciani lets us perform one of three actions each turn: We pause to recoup income as well as deployed ma- terial. Or we invest by playing multifunc- tional tokens and using them in one way or another. We either trigger the actions on them or turn over a tile to build a rail network connecting Leipzig, Görlitz, and Prague. However, everyone at the table is allowed to use the tracks, which is why some test players have already described Nucleum as Brass with hydropower.
So, we plunge right into urban devel- opment, uranium mining and placing a building in the middle of a competitor’s plans at the opportune moment. Which means we constantly have to adjust our own strategy. A game with up to four players can take two and a half hours. Giant Roc is planning to release Nucle- um alongside the international version by Board & Dice in October. (sd/cs)
