Peter Prinz (53) is an engineer for Siemens. He lives with his family in Vienna, Austria. In
2007, his game Thebes was nominated for Spiel des Jahres.
It’s been a long time since we’ve heard from the designer Peter Prinz. What has happened since 2007? Peter Prinz: I had other priorities at the time: a family with two small kids, a house, and a demanding job with a large number of employees. In my spare time, I preferred to do sports—Ultimate Frisbee—and was more into writing than game design.
And no games in between?
Sure, but only on the backburner. I played games, of course, but designed only very little. What I did do, howev- er, was organize puzzle rallies. One of them, a mystery rally based on Sher- lock Holmes Consulting Detective, later became Crime Story for Noris. Now there are new Prinz games again, most recently Raise for Piatnik. What made you decide to return to working as a game designer?
That happened about five or six years
ago. I was brought back to systemat- ic game development by Alexander Pfister, who convinced me to join his playtesting round. Wolfgang Warsch and Tino Jokic from Nanox Games were also members. And coming to think of it, almost all Austrian game designers, small publishers, and agencies. We are meeting weekly to test prototypes. And now there’s another big Prince game released, Comet, by Funtails. The first version is already many years old. But after countless playtests over a year and a half, it turned out to be a really great game that impressed Fun- tails. Big thanks for this to Alex, Tino and Wolfgang.
How much has the game changed since then?
Funtails only balanced the game me- chanics. Theme and title, on the oth- er hand, are entirely the publisher’s choice. My version was still about fairy tales, now it’s about rescuing prehistor- ic animals. This is also a perfect fit for Hendrik Noack’s visual style. It turned out really well.
And have you now found a taste for designing again? Will there be more games in the future?
Oh yes! I have already submitted several prototypes to various publishers. There is also a collaboration with a designer friend of mine that is already pretty far advanced, but I don’t really want to re- veal anything about that yet. (sd/cs)
