Thorsten Hanson (46) from Bochum
is a freelance journalist, and in 2021, he
founded the new publishers The Game Builders, together with game designer Andreas “ode.” Odendahl from the Münster- land region. Their philosophy is to have an open development studio.
What was your motivation for estab- lishing your own publishing house right now?
Thorsten Hanson: The idea was born during the Corona years. We work a lot as a team; I have participated in the development groups for some of ode.’s, that is, my colleague Andreas Odendahl’s games. We then wanted to design games the way we wanted to. For this we have a whole network of people, with a graphic designer and a
distributor, Calderan, who has a back- ground in the book trade. Publishing is, of course, a whole new experience for us.
To kick things off, Applejack brings us an Uwe Rosenberg game.
Yeah, this is a great help to get no- ticed, which is obvious from the many inquiries we receive from bloggers and foreign publishers. Uwe was already very far in the development of his game. And since we only had a narrow timeframe for Essen, we deliberately decided to publish this game first. The planned release of Chai Tea for 2, a localization of a game from the Cana- dian publisher Steeped Games, is not quite ready.
What are your plans for the medium term? Will you publish exclusively family games like Applejack or will “ode. games” also appear at The Game Builders?
For 2023, we have two releases in the pipeline. For one of them, Michael Keller, ode. and Uwe Rosenberg have teamed up. It will definitely be an ex- pert game around the theme of sustain- ability. (sd)

Over seven rounds, one to four future Doges above fifteen years are trying to lead either Amalfi, Ancona, Genoa, Pisa, Ragusa, Venice, Noli or Gaeta (they all come with an individual city action) to fame and glory. The central currency here are small cubes in six colors, with white ones being used as wild cards for yellow and green ones, and black ones as substitutes for orange and purple ones. Depending on what I want to do, I have to pay with matching colors:
The yellow action merchant fleet that buys new colored cubes on the market requires one or two or three or more yel- low cubes—depend- ing on how many actions there were in this round.
