understand what matters. A subtle set collection and optimization game for ad- vanced players, tweaked slightly through localization. For example, if you acciden- tally play a card and start to build that isn’t permitted according to the rules, the original still allows it. In this case, the card might end up blocking one of the three building spots until the end. Now, as soon as the mistake is noticed, the
card is discarded, includ- ing all the resources on it. In addition, the German edi- tion offers a vari- ant that givesan alternative way of getting cards from the draw area. In- stead of having to take all three cards before replenishing, you can replenish af- ter each single card is drawn. (cc/dm) Under the name Die Tiere vom Ahorn- tal, BGC localized the beautiful fam- ily game Crea- ture Comforts by Roberta Taylor, which was originally published by Kids Table BG. Up to five players control work- er families consisting of woodland creatures like rabbits, racoons, or foxes. Over the course of eight months (rounds), they try to create a cozy home for the winter. This is done by means of a
dice placement game for beginners. Before each round, every player rolls two of their own family dice and then posi- tions their four animal workers on the var- ious locations on the village game board: The Inn, The Owl’s Nest, The Forest, or by The River. Everywhere there are goods or
upgrades to get or trade. But whether this really works out is determined by the roll of the four village dice, which takes place now. Then everyone takes turns to try to assign the four neutral and two family dice to the workers in play in a way that maximizes the harvest. If a family member can’t place a worker due to missing need- ed dice, they receive the ability to adjust a die by one in the next round in the form of a Lesson Learned token. Since options change with each round, the game is aimed at families with children aged eight and up. (sd/dm)
Byr Games
The Belgian Beer Race is not so much a race, but rather a journey around Bel- gium with the goal to visit as many brew- eries as possible. You travel from location to location either by bike, the bus, or by hitchhiking. The time needed for the lat- ter two are typically less, but carry some timing risks that a clever beer connois- seur can circumvent by bribing his chauf- feur with barley juice. Of course, you nev- er get behind the wheel yourself because then you wouldn’t be able to enjoy the delicious beers.
You gain victory points for brewery visits and collected souvenirs. Special emphasis is placed on drinking pleasure. Unfortunately, this also increases alcohol levels, which at a certain point will ex- clude biking as a transport option while increasing the travel times by bus and car. But with the help of cheese, which some breweries offer, or long bike rides, the alcohol levels can be lowered again.
