which can be negative, like Nostradamus, which can trigger a sudden ending.
Each game plays completely different because you don‘t always use the same characters, and it lasts ten minutes at most. The phrase ”Change the World in an Instant“ (the title of Funbot‘s local- ization) aptly depicts the surprising and varied gameplay. (cc/sb)
Kosmos
Publisher Kosmos has so far given us a large-box board game for every Ken Fol- lett novel in the “Pillars of the Earth“ se- ries, but now they are shifting to a card game for the prequel “Kingsbridge.“ Kingsbridge — Das Spiel was designed by Wolfgang Kramer and the introducto- ry game is a kind of multiplayer solitaire, in which the goal is to place cards with the values 1 to 13 in ascending order in the rows on display (they can also be regrouped). You win if you are the first player to exhaust your deck of cards, of which you always have only six in your hand at the beginning of a turn, wins. Once these basics are understood, char- acters from the novel appear in the full game, allowing players to perform special actions. However, numbers may only be skipped or repeated once when they are played, after which the personality card moves to your left-hand neighbor. There is also a solo variant, which can also be played cooperatively. A game lasts about twenty minutes and up to five players can participate.
Kosmos also has two milestones to cel- ebrate: 25 years after the first game in the now-successful two-player series ap- peared, the new game Canopy by Tim
Eisner has become the 50th in the series. Over three seasons, two opponents tin- ker on their personal rainforests. They grow trees, plant seeds and attract ani- mals. All this is done by choosing from a face-down pile of cards. Three piles are laid out and may be looked at, one at a time. If you decline to take a pile, you put it back and add a card from the draw deck. You don‘t have to take the third pile, but if you don‘t, then you only get a single card from the deck. Whatev- er you take, it has to be integrated into your forest, and sometimes you‘ll find it does not fit at all, as is the case with fire cards and plants, which can score minus points. During the intermediate scoring phases, the highest trees in the forest are awarded points. A game ends after about half an hour, but not before a final scoring round that offers points for other cards, such as the animals you‘ve collect- ed along the way. (sd/sb)
Mighty Boards
Players take on the role of aliens salvaging the remaining artifacts from a now-unin- habited Earth. On a turn, you use two cards to move three explorers in order to grab artifacts from excavation sites, steal them from smugglers or prepare the market in order to profitably sell collected goods us- ing a follow-up action. The basic rule for almost all actions in Excavation Earth is that the color or symbol of the cards or the location on the map must match. The actual demand is difficult to estimate at the beginning of a round, but drafting can help put together a balanced hand.
