Current. Fall Preview 2023
New Fall Season, New Luck
WBoard Game Circus (2 C142) hen it comes to gaming, there are plenty of very different preferences: Some players prefer set collection, others bag building, others again love puzzles. Choosing the right game often becomes a compromise.
Not with Mythwind, though: The new cooperative game created by Nathan Lige and Brendan McCaskell offers all of these concepts in one—each person at the table chooses a character and uses that specific role’s abil- ities. So, the farmer does the puzzles, the crafts- woman works with her bag, and the merchant collects sets. Despite the asymmetry, all participants are making a joint effort to build a village
together.
One day corresponds to one round. In
the morning, the weather, season and events shape the environment; at noon, everyone in the village does what they do best. The goal is to construct and eventu- ally utilize buildings by working together, which eventually makes the whole vil- lage take a leap forward. In the evening, the characters all return home, even the woodsman, who roams widely in daytime
to discover useful things outside of the village.
Over the course of a game, the char- acters are developed further—and players who absolutely want to do so are free to swap roles after the day is done. What is very special about Mythwind is that there is no defined game end. When a group has had enough for an evening, they pack everything away and continue another time. The game goes on and on— and depending on the group playing, it can progress very differently. In addition to the basic rulebook, there are separate rules for each role, explaining its specific moves and abilities.
Up to four villagers aged twelve plus can play here—as already mentioned, for as long as they like. As befits such a game (it is, of course, crowdfunded), there are also lavish accessories like neoprene mats, miniatures, as well as two expan- sions included. The German version of the Canadian game by Open Owl Studios is supposed to be become available at the
mons. Who plays on which team is only officially revealed after three rounds. However, designer Joost Das grants the demon fans (and not the soul carriers) some true Werewolf-style bonding, by looking into each other’s eyes briefly and secretly before the game starts. Apart from that, it becomes hopefully apparent who belongs to which group by the way people play.
In each round, two barges are an- chored in this world, and players take turns to place a face-down card into them. Since you will always have one card of the opposing faction among your own three hand cards for the three rounds, you want to choose wisely when to use them. Depending on the placement lo- cation, you receive extras, such as gifts and votes. Before you use the latter to decide on sailing one of the two barges, you can use the gift you received to find out something about the other players, or maybe even to change the color of one of the cards on board. For if a barge arrives in the afterlife, extra points are scored for cards of the same color. The other barge is removed from the game, with all souls and demons on board lost.
Four to eight players may gamble, argue and bluff around for an interactive session of 45 minutes. With an odd number of participants, a chaos jester enters play,
