Please tell us about your board gam- ing career.
Torgeir Tjong: I grew up playing board games with my family. In 2010 I dis- covered modern board gaming with Dominion, Agricola and Puerto Rico. Shortly after that I became a member of Bergen Brettspillklubb, a games group that meets weekly or more often. And I
started inventing board games myself. In 2015, we also started a playtesting group in Bergen.
How did you develop KARVI?
I knew quite early on that I wanted to make a game with a Viking theme. Work on Karvi began in 2014 under the working title “Trade ‘n’ Raid.” It was a nice standard worker placement game at first, but quickly evolved into dice workers that lose energy when they take an action. The turning point came in late 2015, when I first used the mech- anism of losing points as energy when you move dice on a track. In 2019, I en- tered “Trade ‘n’ Raid” in the Hippodice competition. Luckily, the game won the prize for “Best Longplayer” and was tak- en on directly by Hans im Glück.
How has the game changed since then?
When I submitted the game to Hippo- dice, I thought it was already pretty good and essentially finished, but the last part with the balance and the ex- act setting of the actions took a lot of
time. The development together with the Hans im Glück team moved the game forward by several steps. Some actions were simplified, and the sea map was also significantly optimized. For example, my earlier version with a scoring system linked to the sailing dis- tance has now become a map where you can move around more freely. And with Ingram Schell’s artwork, the game has evolved even further beyond what I had hoped for. I’m very pleased with how Karvi looks and plays now.
What are your plans for the future?
I will attend Essen for the second time. And I’ll probably spend most of my time at the Hans im Glück booth. I hope to watch Karvi being played, and I want to meet players in person. I still have shelves full of prototypes in various stages of development. But I’ve also sparked an enthusiasm for invent- ing board games with my kids. I love playing and developing family games with them. We’ll see what the future brings. (sd/cs)
who may be blocking a space with their ship. After all, a stronger force on board makes it possible to oust the ships of other Jarls. For this purpose, we need to fortify our team both in number and strength, and keep it healthy. In the event of a clash, you get punched on the nose—and the counters of the warriors are flipped over. If you get hit again, it’s woman overboard.
Luckily, crew damage can be cleverly distributed. So, we set off in search of
gold, fur, provisions and beer, erect build- ings on the map and upgrade our ship. Because some areas on the sea chart are only reserved for experienced Jarls. In October you should be able to sail away
Floodgate Games. Now the cooperative speed game is finally released in German. Everyone around the table flies kites in five colors together. At the beginning, a sand timer is turned over in a neutral color. For each card that someone plays, the tim- er in the corresponding color also comes into play. The task of the players is to keep taking turns and playing cards without one of the timers—running time between 30 and 90 seconds—running out.
Significant improvement
with Karvi.
