o, Evergreen is not a reprint of an early work by Wolfgang Kramer and
Michael Kiesling that has probably been long forgotten (and rightly so). Ever- green is a new, abstract brain teaser by Hjalmar Hach for one to four tree plant- ers from eight years up, who like to brood for about 45 minutes over where to grow what. The beautiful wooden pieces, affec- tionately called treeple, definitely make you want to try your hand at being a re-forester.
The heart of the game is the selection mechanism of the cards. On the one hand, we choose in which biotope we want to place a sapling or let plants grow. On the other hand, all unselected cards have an effect at the end, because they define how valuable each landscape will be in the final scoring. In addition, the cards offer bonus actions, for example, a lake can be placed as a growth turbo for the adjacent trees. Or a bush to connect trees, which becomes important when it comes to scoring the largest forest at the end of the round.
At the end of spring, summer, fall and winter, we also check which trees receive sun and thus points (not only this detail, but the whole theme very strong- ly resembles that of Photosynthesis, but that’s not bad at all, seeing that Hach 2022 is just quoting Hach 2017
here). After 14 turns the game ends, which is when all large trees in each habitat are scored yet again. Evergreen is published in German by Heidelbär Games and an- nounced for the fourth quarter. (ab/cs)

iving up to the publisher’s name is the cooperative Roll Camera! – The
Filmmaking Board Game by Malachi Ray Rempen (originally published by Keen Bean Studio). A group of up to four filmmakers (or even up to six, if they have strong nerves) is tasked with shooting and editing five film scenes. As per usu- al, the production is on a tight budget of time, as well as money, leading to a strug- gle to make ends meet. And like on all film sets, this causes everybody to ignore any arising difficulties, so one of these is added to the list every round, resulting in various problems later on.
Of course, you could also take time for a production meeting in which everyone can pitch their hidden idea cards, from which the active player chooses three candidates: One idea is implemented, a second post- poned, and a third immediately aban- doned. So far, so lifelike. Oh wait, shooting is actually happening as well, en passant: The active player rolls six crew dice, which can either trigger actions on the players’ character sheets or be used on set. Pro- vided the set was duly prepared. The shot scene is then sent to the cutting room, where the film’s future is decided. Medio- cre is not an option. If it’s not a smash hit, make sure you switch to trash now, so it may become a cult classic. If neither work out, then the group loses the game, or if time or money runs out. Roll Camera! is
The eye-catchers of Wild – Serengeti are the 36 wooden animals await- ing their turn at the edge of the board. Designer Gunho Kim has come up with an impressive number of 168 task cards that specify scenes to be shot in the wild (meaning on the board). First, each of the one to four players, above age ten, receives eight scenes and keeps half of

them. The cards vary significantly re- garding their assignment and reward. For example, one type requests that four specific animal species—say, elephant, crocodile, gazelle and giraffe—be placed in a line in the specified order, with the crocodile also on a certain terrain, like grassland. The aspiring documentary filmmaker scores eleven victory points when the animals are correctly placed in their turn, no matter who contributed to that arrangement. Some cards have addi- tional symbols like flowers; it can be use- ful to focus on collecting these, because other tasks allocate points for them.
Worker placement defines which ani- mals may be placed, moved or swapped during a player’s turn, with additional spaces for card replenishment. Since all tasks are laid out openly, the goals of the other players are evident, on close inspection. Caution is required chiefly if there are conflicting interests. In case of a dispute, which of course benefits anyone not involved, the animals usually do not remain at their intended place. Which is
