With Great Western Trail – Argentina, game two of the future trilogy has now been released. Once again, we drive herds of cattle, represented by our deck of cards, across the country to a loading station, this time located in Buenos Aires instead of Kansas City. The Argentina version is not just the old familiar stuff in new garb; designer Alexander Pfister added some local color. The hazard sections from game one have become agricultural areas, where the granjeros, the farmers, need our help. So, if you spend some time to make your cattle available to them as draught animals, their gratitude is guaranteed. They also represent, in addition to the three types we can still hire, a fourth type of worker to be placed on our tableau. From Buenos Aires, the animals are shipped to Europe, where it will be necessary to wait for the right ships. The railroad has also undergone a change. Players who expand it no longer have to drive their herd all the way to the capital, but can load earlier. And hey presto: Your own Estanciero is back at the beginning of the round trip. Great Western Trail – Argentina should be available in October. (sd/cs)
Alexander Pfister (50) lives in Vienna. After studying economics, he worked as a financial
analyst, but is now a full-time game designer. While he is well- known for his lavishly supplied expert games, he has also
been successful with lighter titles such as Port royal or the Kennerspiel des Jahres winners Broom Service and iSle of Skye.
From one to three: Great Western Trail is now a trilogy, and game num- ber two, Argentina, is currently re- leased. How did this all come about? Alexander Pfister: It’s due to the game’s success. This was not meant to be an expansion, but a stand-alone game. But I was very pleased when the publishers ordered it. They wanted to have a setting in other regions of the planet, not Europe or the USA again.
Did you know enough about Argenti- na beforehand?
I had great fun researching and find- ing suitable game mechanisms for this specific country and theme. Clearly, something was going to change about the way the railroad worked. And it was obvious that ships would be a good thing to have: After all, the first cold-storage ships had been around since the 1870s.
Which Great Western Trail would be best for newbies?
The first one, the base game. It only takes about 20 minutes to explain the differences to someone who already knows game one. But I think that the Argentina edition is certainly not eas- ier to play.
Game three with a New Zealand theme is to be released in 2023. Surely that’s about sheep, right?
Of course, people expect that! But it’s not only about shipping meat, you can also sell the wool. And the land- scape of New Zealand with a North and South Island is of course very fas- cinating. (sd/cs)
