 Vorwort
  Dear readers,
spielbox has been around for 40 years now. The first issue was published in October 1981 (as you can see on the picture). So for 40 years, we have been dedicated to games and journalism about games. Our history is closely tied to that of the Inter- national Spieltage in Essen. They were first hosted in 1983, specifically as a get together for our readers. The fact that both spielbox (or SpielBox at the time) and the SPIEL convention were originally conceived in the same house can also be seen in the logo which shows undeniable similarities.
As the world’s largest and oldest magazine for game journal- ism, spielbox has been a beacon in an ever-growing sea of new games for four decades. Today there are so many that no one would be able to bring all new releases on the table to get a complete overview. This is where our large team of experienced critics can provide some orientation as they check what is interesting in the first place. In our reviews, we then take a look to see if it was just the exterior that caught our eye or if deeper explorations are worth-while. Additionally, there are small ex- pansions and goodies for great games in almost every issue. In the current issue #5/21, it is one for Minecraft: Builders and Biomes, for example.
We also talk to the people behind the games who poured a lot of time and heart and soul into their development. Regularly, we introduce these people and share about their drive and pas- sion for games. It is specifically the people we sit around the ta- ble with and the direct interactions with them that make board games so special. However, we also look at the economic devel- opments in the industry critically. Another important topic of the magazine is the history of board gaming as a hobby that we look at from time to time. In addition to looking back, however, we also look into the future and the next year. This traditionally begins with Essen, as the fall sees the most new releases in the
market. Here, too, no one can show everything. That’s why we looked at what we found interesting; we did a deep dive for the pearls — and not only among the fair exhibitors, but also among those that are
not in Essen this year because they did not want to expose their employees to increased health risks during the Corona pandemic.
The new year is not the only
topic of this Special, but also
of spielbox issue #5/21,
where you can already find
some reviews of games that are now being released: Witch- stone by Huch, for example, or Llamaland and Great Plains from Lookout Games, Uwe Rosenberg’s Tulpenfieber by Amigo, or Dwergar by Granna/Asmodee. If you are wondering what the easiest way is to get your hands on the magazine, just head over to our webshop at www.spielbox-shop.de.
If you happen to be in Essen and have the time and inclination, please feel free to visit us at our booth D128 in hall 2. Our team would love to meet you and chat. With playful greetings
                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                  spielbox special 1
