in a surprisingly demanding way. And that’s without add- ing tons of rules only to arrive at the brain-twist level of Hadrian’s Wall or Twilight Inscription. The dilemmas you experience in all Pick a Pen games are and remain surprising, challenging, exciting, and tedious—and they keep everyone entertained. Including me, who brings them with me everywhere and can always recruit new players easily.
All Pick a Pen games are recommended for those who want to play something relaxed, but not super simple. These are the kind of games you should have in your gift drawer just in case you need a good present quickly. You can’t go wrong with them. (dm)

Rolling pencils instead of dice is unique, but doesn’t change the game. However, it is easier to get mixed
up. I find Gardens to be the most well-rounded of the games, because the colored pencils are used to paint over a large area. Reefs is brainier and tougher, Crypts has the least replay value.

Pencil dice are a nice gimmick in terms of playing technique, which also seems like a way to reduce production costs.

Neat game idea with original game material. However, the various tasks in the series feel very similar.

Three mechanically similar levels without much suspense.

Extending color lines is appealing, but is much more exciting in the Next Station games.

Pleasantly abstract and clear, but doesn’t leave much room for decision making.
