This is absolutely essential, because we want to board ships and need combat power to do so. We can always exceed our previous record journey by one step. The more we take risks, the more likely it is that adventure cards will bring up krak- ens or other unsympathetic characters that will make our lives miserable.
But the game ends only when someone dares to sail seven steps successfully. To do this, each individual adventure card on the track must be defeated by the appropriate number of skulls on the dice and hand cards. If the result is not suffi- cient, you can reroll one of the maximum seven six-siders in your own supply. And what are the other captains doing while you are struggling with whirlpools, octo- pods and storms? They look at the display before you set sail and bid on your suc- cess. If they bid against you, and you still succeed, you take doubloons off them. These and collected diamonds determine the winner, after 45 to 60 minutes. Pi-
