With over 300 cards and almost 80 envelopes, the fictional world of The King’s Dilemma is vast and interconnected. How exactly is it all related each other? Once the campaign was over, I had time to take a closer look at the game struc- ture: What are the stories? How much freedom of action do we actually have? How many paths are there, and how many endings? The following graph shows – don’t worry no spoilers here – how complex the entire decision tree in The King’s Dilemma actually is.
Each circle and rectangle represent an envelope containing four cards each. The colors indicate the indi-
vidual plots, while arrows indicate which envelopes lead to opening new enve- lopes. The circles marked with “S” are normal story cards, the rectangles marked with “E” represent envelopes that herald the end of a story.
Completing all six stories brings you to the end of the campaign, which con- sists of a whole new set of envelopes. As you can see, there are many possible
story threads that run through the cam- paign. Some start at the beginning of the game, while others are unlocked later on. Depending on card distribution and play- ers’ decisions, the plot can have a linear progression or jump between stories. Regardless, by its very nature The King’s Dilemma is diverse. Although the game has no dead ends, the publisher antic- ipated that people can make a mistake and get stuck, and created an online trou- bleshooting tool to get you back on track.
